Barrier Miner 24th January 1918
PRIVATE REGINALD HALL. Private Reginald Hall, who was reported missing on April 15 1917, has now been reported killed in action on that date. He spent his early boyhood days in Gawler, and received his education at the Good Samaritan Nuns' School. After leaving school he worked at Orroroo, Broken Hill (at Fotherby's dairy) and Gladstone, finally returning to Gawler. Prior to enlisting he was employed at Baker's livery stables as bus driver between the Gawler railway station and the town. He was amongst the first to volunteer and he sailed for Egypt with the first Australian contingent at the end of October 1914. He did duty at Quinn's Post (Dardanelles), and he also saw service in France. |

Mr Albert Hatcher of Virginia, has received news that his second son, Pte. Mark Hatcher, has been killed in action in France. Only a few months ago Mr Hatcher lost his eldest son similarly. A third son is now at the front. The late Pte. Mark Hatcher relinquised a lucerative butchering business at Virginia to enlist. He was a keen sportsman, was about 25 years of age, and was highly esteemed among his many friends. HOGBEN Sgt. R.H. Hogben of the 16th Battalion, who was killed at the Dardanelles was a son of Mr. Richard Hogben, of Thebarton. Deceased was a bricklayer and stonemason by trade. When war was declared he was one of the first to offer his service, but was deferred for further examination. On again offering his service a few weeks later he was accepted. His previous eight years' military experience stood him in good stead, for he quickly gained his sergeant's stripes. Deceased who was highly respected will be mourned for by his many friends at Thebarton, and also by members of the Carrondown Church, Brompton, of which he was a member and a Sunday School teacher. Sgt. Hogben who was 34 years of age, leaves a wife and four children. |
