Sgt. Eric Cecil Walker, who was killed in action on June 10, was the only son of Mr and Mrs W. Walker of Glenelg. He was in his 23rd year. Prior to enlisting Sgt. Walker was in the metallurgical department of the school of Mines. He entered Mitcham Camp on July 2, 1915 embarked September 14, with the 5th Reinforcements, 27th Battalion, for Egypt, where he spent five months and was among the first Australians to go to France. After seven months strenuous fighting, he was sent to England, where for six months he was in hospitals and on furlough. |

The Register 19th August 1918 The news of the death abroad on August 10 of Major John C. Wells, A.A.M.C, as the result of wounds, will be received with regret in Adelaide. Major Wells enlisted in 1914. and, with the exception of short leave last year, had been on active service ever since. He went through the Gallipoli campaign, spent nearly two years in the Egyptian desert, and had done service in France. The deceased was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Clement Wells, of South terrace, Adelaide. He was educated at St. Peter's College, and took his medical degree at the Adelaide University. |

Captain Wheeler has served with this Unit an Quartermaster since March 1916, and has during the period February to September 1917, shown conspicuous devotion to duty. On the Somme from 24th February to 7th April during the German retreat he did excellent work in pushing forward supplies of all kinds under extremely adverse conditons and again in May during the Bullecourt Battle. He has always shown great foresight and devotion to duty in emergencies and has rendered conspicuous service as Quartermaster and Transport Officer and merits special recognition. |

Whelan, of the railway crossing near Willaston, from the military authorities announcing the death of their third eldest son, Pte. James Whelan, will be regretted by a large circle of friends. Pte. Jas. Whelan enlisted in West Australia where he had removed from Gawler two years ago. He was possessed of a bright and jovial disposition and was employed on the railway line for a number of years. He was educated at the Gawler Sisters of St. Joseph's School. Mr. and Mrs. Whelan have still three sons on active service. |

THE LATE PRIVATE H. W. WILSON. The late Private Harold W. Wilson, who was killed in action in France on December 2 last, was the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs.George Wilson, of Williamstown, where he was born on September 18, 1898. He enlisted in March, 1915, and sailed for the front on June 24. Private Wilson entered the trenches in October. A cousin, writing on December 4, said: - Jim (Private Wilson) might have been all right if he had left the trenches with the rest of the battalion, but he stayed behind to help his mate who had sore feet, and a shell caught them. They were buried in the same grave, and I will try to put a cross with Jim's name on it. |

Chronicle 23rd September 1916 Mrs C. Woods of Queen street, Gawler South, has been notified that her son, Lance Corporal Harry J. Woods died on August 27, from wounds received in France. The deceased was 23 years of age and he enlisted on December 28, 1914. He served for three months on Gallipoli and was then invalided to England. Prior to enlisting he was employed at Shearer Bros., Kilkenny as an engineer. He was engaged in similar capacity at Martin & Co's establishment at Gawler for some time, and he also served at the post office for a limited period. He was keenly interested in sport and was a member of the Willaston Football Club. Lance Corporal Woods is the first Gawler born boy reported to have been killed during the war. |
Awarded the Victoria Cross
For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty near Le Verguier, north west of St Quentin, on the 18th September, 1918, when, with a weak patrol, he attacked and captured a very formidable enemy post, and subsequently, with two comrades, held the same against heavy enemy counter-attacks. Although exposed to heavy fire of all descriptions, he fearlessly jumped on the parapet and opened fire on the attcking enemy inflicting severe casualties. He kept up his fire, and held up the enemy until help arrived, and throughout the operations displayed a splendid example of valour, determination an initiative. |
