On each occasion, the ground through which he had to pass was under heavy shell fire. He displayed the utmost coolness and courage, and kept the work going without intermission. His efforts and example undoubtedly contributed in no small degree to the safe survival of large quantities of ammunition and stores, in the forward area. On one occasion he worked for five consecutive hours under very heavy shell fire between Anzac House and Zonnebeke Cemetery, ammunition at that time being very badly needed. Near Zonnebeke 4th to 9th Oct., 1917. This man acted as runner between Company and Battalion H.Q. He frequently had to pass through heavily shelled areas, and on each day and night of the period, had this trying duty to perform. Without hesitation, he delivered all his messages in wonderfully short spaces of time. His fearlessness and devotion to duty, were remarkable. |
