Melbourne Herald 5th May 1937
Digger Son's Bible Comes Home On his final leave before embarkation with an A.I.F Battalion, Private E.W. Parham, 37, received from his mother a compact Bible, inscribed with a few loving words.... On the bloody salient of Ypres, he went out on a raid, never came back, and was posted missing. Peace came, a French peasant, ploughing, found a skeleton with an identity disc. The British War Graves Commission re-interred the bones in one of the great cemeteries, and engraved the name on one of the millions of tombstones which stand above Britain's immortal dead in France. * * * * A German war veteran lay dying in his bed in his Bavarian home a few months ago. In his own last moments, the German's mind went back across the years to the last moments of a severely wounded "English soldier" (as he thought him), who had said to him at Ypres: "Here Fritz... you'd better .. take ..this..." and handed him an English Bible. "Fritz" had put the bible in his kit and forgot about it for years. To his brother at the bedside he said: "search my old war kit for an English Bible. Give it back... Lebewohl ... Kamerad...Got mit uns. The only clue the brother found was the name E.W. Parham; the words "Mother" and "Australia". He sent the bible to the Australian High Commissioner in London with a request that even at this late date an effort should be made to find this Australian Mother. The High Commissioner sent it to Base Records, Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, where the indexed name and record of every man who enlisted in the A.I.F. can be turned up in a few minutes. There was only one man of that name and initials in the A.I.F. He had nominated his mother as next of kin. A letter to the address given in the attestation papers brought the reply that she was alive, and fairly well, considering her age of 83. The Digger's bible has been restored to the mother who gave it.Now she has asked the High Commissioner to disclose the name and address of the German's surviving brother so that so that she might give him another bible inscribed with an aged mother's thanks and her prayer that innocent men might never again be sent out to kill and be killed. The name and address will be supplied. Adelaide Advertiser 27th May 2014 (in part) They died in France on a World War 1 battlefield almost 100 years ago, but finally the families of four South Australian soldiers have the comfort of knowing where they rest. The latest men identified were among 250 Australian and British Troops uncovered in a mass grave at Pheasant Wood near Fromelles in 2009. Private Edgar William Parham of Gawler is one of these men. New headstones will be dedicated at the 98th anniversary ceremony of the Battle of Fromelles on July 19 this year. |
