Gilbert, of Pewsey Vale, had been killed in action on May 28. In the first week of the war he enlisted as a private in the Lancaster Territorials, together with several fellow employees in the celebrated Westinghouse works. His regiment was sent to Egypt, and was there for some time before being ordered away, presumably to the Dardanelles. he was 30 years of age. before going to the other side of the world Mr Gilbert worked at Messrs Martin and Co's engineering works, Gawler. LATE PTE. S. G. GR1GG. HAMLEY BRIDGE, April 14.—'Yesterday evening news was received that Pte. S. G. Grigg, of the 27th Battalion, had been killed in France on March 26. He enlisted for the front in December, 1914, and sailed early in April, 1915, for Egypt, where he spent a few months. Thence he proceeded to Gallipoli, and he remained in the firing line there until the evacuation, after which he went to France with his battalion. At the time of his death he was 25 years of age. He was the youngest son of Mr. Joseph Grigg, of this town, and his elder brother is now in camp and about to leave for the front. The late Lce.-Opl. Grigg was very popular in this district. He was one of the best players in the Haanley Bridge Football Club. Chronicle (Adealide, S.A.) 12-5-1917
THE LATE PRIVATE S. G. GRIGGS. News has been received by Mrs. I. Zilm, of Belalie North and late of Hamley Bridge, that her adopted son. Private S. G. Griggs, was killed in action on March 26. He was in his 26th year. He enlisted on January 3, 1915, in the 27th Battalion, and sailed for Egypt on April 30 of the same year. From there he went to France. He was a keen sportsman, and well liked and respected by all who knew him. |

On the 26th April 1918 when all the Company Stretcher bearers had become casualties, volunteers were called for, and these men immediately responded, and without hesitation went out under heavy machine gun fire and dressed wounded. They continued dressing and carrying wounded all that day and night and also the following day. They showed a fine example of cheerfulness and endurance, and their work was of very great value. |
